Zumba Certification – What You need to Know

If you are interested in becoming a Zumba instructor, you must first attend a Zumba certification course. In order to keep your Zumba certification current you must continue to attend one of the many courses offered by the Zumba Academy yearly, or you may choose to join the Zumba Instructor Network.

The first step in Zumba certification is to find instructor training near your location. There is a new instructor tool on the official website that will assist you in finding this information. You will first be required to attend the Zumba basic 1 course. This will teach you the foundation and formula to a Zumba class. The four basic rhythms to Zumba are meringue, salsa, cumbia, and reggaeton. After completion of this course you will have all the basic information to teach your own Zumba class and you will gain Zumba certification for one year.  Standard Zumba certification courses start at $210 depending on the location and sell out quickly. There are no prerequisites to getting your Zumba certification.

Once you have received your Zumba Certification with the Basic 1 course, you have the option to narrow your concentration and become certified in any of the other six areas of Zumba instruction.  Zumba Gold is a course designed for current instructors who would like to concentrate on teaching older adults. There is an option for new instructors to receive their Zumba certification in Zumba Gold though a Gold Basic class.

For the advanced instructor there is a Zumba certification course called Zumba Basic 2. In this course you will learn four more dance rhythms: belly dance, flamenco, tango, and samba.

Zumba Toning is for current instructors and teaches techniques on how to incorporate body-sculpting moves into the workout. This transforms the Zumba class into a calorie-burning and strength training class.

There is also a pool Zumba workout course available. Here, the Zumba formula is combined with water to provide a challenging water workout.

If you enjoy teaching kids from age 4-12, the Zumbatomic Zumba certification course may be for you. Kids will get fit while listening, shaking, wiggling and dancing with their friends.

The Zumba Certification course outline:

What should you expect out of your Basic 1 Course?

The day will begin early and the course will be taught by a master Zumba instructor. Most courses are one day courses, although some do span over 2 days.  Paperwork and registration are completed at the beginning of the day before class begins.

The first part of the day will be a master dance Zumba class. You will have a short break, the opportunity to change out of sweaty clothes and get ready for a lecture style class. Each dance move will be reviewed and then you will do a few songs with that dance move.

After a lunch break you will break out the Zumba Basic 1 manual and learn:

  • Beto and the history of Zumba
  • Warm-ups
  • Cueing classes
  • Choreography
  • Music
  • Modifications

You will end the day with more dancing!

Once you have your Zumba certification, you have only completed the first part of the process. Practice, choreograph your own dances, practice, learn, practice, take classes, practice and then apply for a job!
